His family has strong southern roots. His father named Arthur Ravenel was also a congressman from South Carolina. In Charleston, there is bridge after the name of Ravenel’s father in order to commemorate the services he rendered. Ravenel graduated from The Citadel in Charleston, receiving his B.S. in 1985, and later received his MBA from the University of South Carolina in 1991.

Ravenel’s political career was stigmatized when he was found guilty of being a cocaine user . He ran for the US Senate in 2004 and came in third in the Republican primary. Upon losing ,  he went on to run for State Treasurer in 2006 and won. In June 2007 , Ravenel was alleged of having bought less than 500 mg of coacine using an intermediary in 2005 before his elections as a Treasurer. he was suspended from his duties and he even spent time in a Rehabilitation center.

Ravenel is currently in a relationship with Kathryn Dennis and the couple has a baby girl, Kensington Calhoun Ravenel. Kathryn also stars in the TV reality show “Southern Charm” along with Ravenal.
