His place of Birth is Las Vegas, Nevada.  Naturally gifted with a good height (1.88m) and a sturdy body, he was a natural for the game of soccer. He played College Football and was picked up by the Baltimore Ravens in 2001. He is most famous for the tenure he spent playing for Baltimore Ravens. He played there from 2001 up to 2004. He also played for the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders.After the 2004 season, Hartwell became a free agent and was signed to a six-year, $26.25 million contract by the Atlanta Falcons. He was released on March 2, 2007 after lasting two injury-plagued seasons with the Falcons.In 2010 he opted for signing a contract with the Las Vegas Locomotives.

In 2005, Hartwell married Lisa Wu, famous for her  TV role in The Real Housewives of Atlanta. The couple bought a suburban Atlanta mansion in June of 2007. They received a $2.9 million dollar adjustable rate mortgage on the property. Only after two years after the home was foreclosed due to default. The Hartwells ventured into many businesses together including a real estate firm, a jewelry line, a t-shirt line, and a women’s clothing store. Sadly the marriage couldn’t last for long as Lisa Hartwell filed for divorce on August 24, 2011. The divorce was finalized on October 7, 2011. The court document gave her name as Sharon Millette Hartwell.

In 2016 , Ed  Hartwell married the former Cosby actress Keisha Knight Pullman.Only after seven months secretly marrying each other, and  less than a week after announcing that the couple were expecting their first child together, Ed Hartwell filed a divorce from the actress. Hartwell also is also requesting a paternity test for the baby.He said in an interview  ““What I learned about her is that if she wants something, she wants it now and she’s going to go get it. That’s one of the reasons we actually stopped having sex,” .
